Kurt Vile – Smoke Ring For My Halo

Kurt Vile put out one of my favorite albums this year and it was one of those albums that immediately stuck for me and was just really easy to enjoy. Judging from his songwriting Kurt Vile strikes me as a guy who sleeps in past noon, skips a lot of showers, and chooses to grow his hair long not for stylistic reasons, but for the simple fact that it makes going out and getting a haircut one less thing to do. When listening to his mumbling and his half-asleep delivery I find myself wondering how someone who sounds so bored can also be so interesting. But at his core, Kurt Vile is a genuine songwriter and even if he never really aspires to say anything of great consequence, that notion only contributes to his laid back, easygoing personality. The simplicity of this album is what makes it initially enjoyable, but it’s Kurt Vile’s palpable, real identity that makes it loveable.
