Top 10 Albums of 2011 #10

Mastodon – The Hunter

On The Hunter, Mastodon doesn’t have the bite from Leviathan or the brilliance from Crack the Skye, but what it is instead is a mixed bag. The band comes with slow, psychedelic tracks like the title track, The Sparrow, and Creature Lives. Then there are the fast-paced headbangers like Spectrelight and the opening three tracks. Where I enjoy this album the most though is when the songs fall in this cozy in-between area like on Stargasm, All The Heavy Lifting, Dry Bone Valley, and Thickening. This album is by no means a masterpiece, but it’s got some great guitar riffs from Brent Hinds and some aggressive drumming from Brann Dailor that make this album enjoyable through the whole record.
